World Book Day 2019

Updated: Aug 6, 2020

Book review for small business owners and freelancers

The 7th March 2019 is World Book Day. I don’t know about you, but I still haven’t embraced reading a book on a tablet. I find that I easily forget about an e-book as it is hidden away in a device (out of sight, out of mind). I’ve tried it, but I still prefer a good old fashioned book.

As many children head off to school dressed up as their favourite book characters, I thought I would share with you a few of my recent reads.

Rework: Change the way you work forever

By Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson

Written by the founders of Chicago software company 37signals.

Not that long ago, working remotely would have been a huge challenge, but now technology is freely available and simple to use, it offers a variety of solutions to the freelancer. Starting a business is easier than ever.

Rework challenges you to forget about business plans, meetings and offices. The book begins by suggesting that you don’t need to have ambitions to endlessly grow your business. Staying small can be good, staying small enables you to be agile and flexible.

Keeping your business simple, not trying to provide everything to everyone, means you focus on what you are good at and do it well.

I found this book easy to digest and relatable. Rework offers valuable inspiration and guidance to the small business owner.

The Likeable Expert: 121 Insights to Start Your Day and Grow Your Business

By Michael J. Katz

Written by Michael J. Katz, an experienced independent professional, this book is made up of short pieces which start with “Today, I...”

The content started out as a series of blogs that Katz put together for his marketing students.

It offers practical advice and strategies for entrepreneurs and freelancers. Some of the entries gave me a different perspective on certain business situations and how I would deal with them.

What better way to learn than from someone who has been there and done it already?

You Are Awesome: Find Your Confidence and Dare to be Brilliant at (Almost) Anything: The Number One Bestseller

By Matthew Syed

My last review isn’t a business book, but it is empowering and inspiring.

Written by Olympian and author Matthew Syed, agony uncle and children's author Matt Whyman and mindset transformer Kathy Weeks. This is a great book and is suitable for both children and adults.

You Are Awesome offers a straight forward explanation about the meaning of a fixed mindset and how to develop a Growth Mindset. How practice and perseverance are powerful tools in any part of life and it encourages learning from mistakes.

It is a humorous read about different and positive ways of thinking and approaching life.

What are you reading at the moment? I would love to hear your book suggestions.
